Abramoff is expected to help prosecutors conduct examinations into the actions of lawmakers, congressional aides and other lobbyists in Washington, The New York Times reported.

U.S. border surveillance needs work. Despite the $400 million dedicated to remote surveillance cameras and sensors along U.S. borders since 1997, Richard Skinner, the Department of Homeland Security inspector general, says those measures are still largely ineffective in detecting illegal activity.

The report calls for improvements in technology integration and standardization of data collection and analysis.

The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee acted in December on the bill that would reshape the existing federal Emergency Alert System that relies on cable and broadcast television and radio. The bill would also pave the way for a national tsunami warning system.
